Swappin' Meetin' Categories

  Music:

The Swappin' Meetin' Committee attempts to arrange a musical program that both entertains and reflects the variety of musical styles and instruments of Appalachia, past and present. This includes but is not limited to blues, gospel, bluegrass, folk music, country music, and traditional mountain music.

  Crafts and Folklife Demonstrations:

Swappin' Meetin' recruits craftsmen and demonstrators with various crafts and folk skills in an attempt
1) to preserve the Appalachian heritage of making and doing things by hand,
2) to teach others of the value of this heritage, and
3) to promote these skills in the hope that others will take an interest and continue the tradition.

It is preferred that artisans be able to demonstrate how their work is created. In addition, the use of hand or foot-powered tools during the creation of a craft item or the performance of a demonstration adds to the uniqueness of these craft items, demonstrations and the overall Swappin' Meetin' festival experience.

Demonstrations have included the making of lye soap, hominy, furniture,cider/apple butter, sorghum molasses, butter, candles, leather tooling, wooden toys, bowls, pottery, wood carvings, whittling and demonstrating washboard use, blacksmithing, basket weaving, cornshuck dolls and flowers, hand carved musical instruments and so forth.

Craft items for display or sale at Swappin' Meetin' are to be handmade and representative of the Appalachian culture and heritage.
