EKU'S FAA APPROVALS, PARTNERSHIPS WITH KCTCS MAKE PATH TO AVIATION CAREERS EASIER, QUICKER
Eastern Kentucky University now boasts the nation's first FAA-approved 1,000-hour power, 2+2 degree pathway, and it is easily accessible across the commonwealth, thanks to EKU's partnerships with four institutions in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System: Southeast, Ashland, Owensboro and Hazard.

Kacey Lefevers is crowned Miss Southeast
The Miss Southeast Pageant was held Feb. 7 in the auditorium of Letcher County Central High School in Whitesburg with nine students contending for the title. Participants were judged on their composure, talent, an on-stage question and answer and an interview with the judges. Billed as an evening of splendor, entertainment and beauty, the winner received a $1,000 one-semester scholarship to attend Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College and will represent the college at the Mountain Laurel Festival that is held each May in Pineville. The winner of the 2015 pageant was Kacey Mariah Lefevers of Middlesboro

February 24-26, 2015 Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College Associate Degree Nursing Program will host a site review for continuing accreditation by The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

Southeast and Appalachian Challenge Academy sign agreement for dual credit courses
A memorandum of agreement between Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College and Appalachian Challenge Academy (ACA), located at Grays Knob in Harlan County, was finalized recently that will allow academy cadets the opportunity to take two courses, carpentry fundamentals and introduction to automotive systems, at the SKCTC Harlan campus.

Southeast students Jacob Carroll and Robin Shoemaker have been selected to serve in leadership positions for Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year colleges and academic programs.

Miss Southeast Pageant to be held at Letcher Central Feb. 7
Contestants are being sought to compete in the 2015 Miss Southeast Scholarship Pageant to be held Saturday, Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at the Letcher County Central High School, Whitesburg. Winner to receive tuition scholarship for one semester valued at $1,000.

Community Diversity Breakfast set for January 17 at Benham Inn
The ninth annual Community Diversity Breakfast celebrating the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be held Saturday, Jan. 17 at 9 a.m. at the Benham School House Inn.
Speakers for the event will be the Rev. Sandra Jones and Justin Preston of Big Stone Gap, Va.
Rev. Jones will present a narrative of the American Civil Rights Movement and provide historical information about the life and legacy of Dr. King. Following Jones’ presentation, Mr. Preston will present King’s legendary “I Have a Dream Speech”

Southeast Ugly Sweater Run/Walk sported holiday flair
Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College recently hosted the Ugly Sweater Run/Walk event on the Cumberland Campus. A field of 45 competed in the event which featured a two-mile run or a one-mile walk over a challenging course across the campus.

A float built by students, faculty and staff associated with the Automotive Technology program at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College has won awards in local Christmas parades.

Southeast makes a splash with regatta
Students enrolled in the Project Lead the Way initiative, operated by Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College and available to college and high school students, participated recently in a competition and tests of boats assembled of cardboard, deck sealant and duct tape.

Middlesborough Little Theatre actors recognized at state event
Middlesborough Little Theatre standouts Hilarie Spangler and Clayton Baker won outstanding performance awards at the recent Kentucky Theater Association’s conclave held at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. They were directed by Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College faculty member Amelia Simpson who recently directed them on the local stage in The Miracle Worker.

SOUTHEAST CHOIR CHRISTMAS CONCERT SLATED for DEC. 11-14
The choir of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College will present its Christmas concert that has been scheduled for Dec. 11 and 14. Directed by Professor Ann Schertz, the choir will perform on Thursday the 11th at 7 p.m. at the Cumberland Methodist Church and again on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 2:30 p.m. at the Harlan Episcopal Church. The choir is accompanied by Clara Atkins-Pope.

Ugly Sweater Run/Walk event planned for SKCTC Cumberland
The Ugly Sweater Run/Walk event will be held Thursday, Dec. 11 at 5:30 p.m. on the Cumberland campus of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College. The run/walk competition will be presented exclusively on the campus as participants have the option of running two miles or walking one mile. The entry fee is $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Southeast and Union sign agreement
According to Dr. Lynn Moore, president of Southeast, students from the community college will complete the first 67-plus hours with SKCTC and then go directly to Union to finish their bachelors degree in business administration, social work, criminal justice, psychology and the bachelors in middle school science and middle school math and social studies.

Southeast Whitesburg students sponsor ‘Smash for the Cause’ Extra Life Marathon
An adventurous and caring group of Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College faculty, staff and students from the Whitesburg campus came together recently to raise charitable funds to help children at the Cincinnati Hospital Medical Center which is a member of the Children’s Miracle Network of Hospitals.

Boy Scout Camporee focuses on coal; SKCTC-staffed resources beneficial to youth
Boy Scouts from across the area recently became the first in Kentucky to successfully complete requirements for the new Mining In Society merit badge. They did so with support provided by Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College and the Kentucky Coal Academy.

Angela Simpson named VP and Chief Financial Officer for Southeast
A Cumberland native and SKCTC alumnus, Angela Simpson was recently selected as CFO and brings to the position over 30 years of service to the college. In her job, she is entrusted with managing a budget in excess of $20-million for Southeast which operates five, full-service campuses in Harlan, Bell and Letcher counties. SKCTC has an enrollment of approximately 4,000 students.

Southeast celebrates milestone with the 50th Annual Kingdom Come Swappin' Meetin'
It was a wonderful time to “Keep the Traditions Alive” during the 50th Kingdom Come Swappin’ Meetin’ held Oct. 3-4 on the Cumberland campus of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College. The event, one of oldest arts and crafts and music events in the commonwealth of Kentucky, attracted hundreds to the site over its two-day run.

EKU Aviation Program to be offered at Southeast in Middlesboro
Southeast Kentucky Community &Technical College and Eastern Kentucky University have joined forces for the Aviation: Aerospace Technology program. The much regarded program will allow local students to earn their Associate’s Degree with all course work offered at the Middlesboro campus. Upon completion of the degree, students will then pursue a Bachelor’s Degree at the EKU main campus in Richmond.

Southeast golf classic attracts large field, proceeds go for scholarships
The annual Lillian Faye Simpson Southeast Scholarship Golf Classic attracted a record number of players recently to Sleepy Hollow Golf Course at Cumberland. A total of 16 foursomes competed for various prizes and money during the 18-hole, best ball scramble format competition that generated several thousand dollars for scholarships, enabling deserving students the opportunity to attend Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College.

Pre-game celebration marks “kickoff” to school year; Dr. McCall on hand for the
The college kicked off the school year in grand style August 7 with a pregame party held at the Benham School House Inn. Southeast President and “head coach” Dr. Lynn Moore directed the event which marked the beginning of the school year with faculty and staff gathering for in-service sessions. Many in attendance wore SKCTC football jerseys and others wore shirts with the colors of their colleges and universities.

Southeast’s Upward Bound program has six-weeks session; concludes with tour of famed Redstone Arsenal in Alabama
With summertime quickly beginning to dwindle away, the unhurried weeks of June and July will likely be engraved forever into the collective memories of the students who took part in the Upward Bound Program camp sponsored by Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College. During the recently concluded six-weeks program, 35 high school students from Harlan County High School and Bell County High School participated in the summer program that proved to be a time to learn, grow and explore – seeing things many in the group had never had the chance to experience, according to Upward Bound director Dr. Michelle Dykes-Anderson.

Portal 31 mine tour operated by SKCTC enjoying record-setting summer
With the numbers for July in the book with 1,099 visitors enjoying the tour, Portal 31 has served 300 more patrons than at any other time in its history -- a rather noteworthy statistic since the site opened a bit later in the springtime as repairs to correct a drainage problem had to be addressed. "Our goal is to serve 1,000 customers each month, and during July we topped that mark; we hope to continue the momentum into August and into the fall" noted Drenda Crider, the SKCTC vice president of external education.

Kentucky Coal Museum unveil new Window Exhibit
"Nearly everyone enjoys visiting a museum, but very few understand all that is involved behind the scenes in making a museum visit an enjoyable experience," said Alexia Ault, registrar and cataloger for the Kentucky Coal Museum and Appalachian Archives, commenting on the new window exhibit at the museum located at Benham. "That is why we are allowing the public to see firsthand some of the activities they would normally never see by doing them in the front display window of the Kentucky Coal Museum."

Southeast’s Appalachian Program receives funding for additional arts programming
A coalition coordinated by the Appalachian Program at Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College (SKCTC) recently received $100,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts Our Town Program in support of eighteen months of innovative arts programming fostering community interaction focused on emerging regional artists as part of a larger community renewal effort.

The Glow Run 5k Run / 1 Mile Walk Returns to the Kingdom Come Swappin' Meetin'
The 3rd annual Kingdom Come Swappin’ Meetin’ 5k will be held Oct 3, 2014. This is the second year it will be run as a Glow Run. Participants will receive a t-shirt and glow items. Everyone is encouraged to wear things that will glow in the dark! Pre-registration fee is $20 and onsite registration is $25.

Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College students Emily C. Nantz of Harlan and Amanda Baker of Middlesboro were named recently as a members of the 2014 KCTCS All-Academic Team. Honorees from all 16 KCTCS colleges were honored during a luncheon in Owensboro and held as part of the system's New Horizons initiative.

Lillian Faye Simpson Southeast Scholarship Golf Classic Set For August 16th at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Cumberland, Kentucky.
Year after year, students at Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College students have been faced with a rising cost for their education. Tuition increases coupled with a rise in gas and food costs, not to mention childcare, have placed a hardship on many students. The Southeast Scholarship Golf Tournament supports local students each year with a dedicated effort from our community.

Workforce Solutions holds Career Craze camps for local elementary and middle school students.
SKCTC and its Workforce Solutions team have wrapped up Project STEM camps held at Whitesburg and on the Middlesboro campus. The camps, held for two days, were open to children ages 12-15 and featured sections on energy, environmental science, physics and mathematics.

Phi Theta Kappa induction ceremony held at SKCTC
An induction ceremony for new members of the Xi Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an academic honorary at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, was held recently in the Edsel Godbey Appalachian Center on the Cumberland campus. Members of the organization must have a 3.5 grade point average or higher and have completed 20 hours of course work leading to an associate’s degree.

The 49th commencement and the awarding of credentials at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College was held May 9 with over 350 individuals receiving degrees, diplomas and certificates during the event held at the Harlan County High School. Dr. Lynn Moore, president of the college, presided over the ceremony.

Brandon Robinson to deliver SKCTC commencement address
Brandon Robinson is coming home. As a student at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College he sharpened his broadcasting skills and laid the groundwork for a successful career in television as a meteorologist for power-laden WYMT-TV, the CBS affiliate for all of eastern and southern Kentucky.

SKCTC Nursing and Funeral Service students gain important emergency experience in Mock Disaster
Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College staged its annual mock disaster drill April 23 at the Harlan campus with students and area first responders participating in the exercise. SKCTC nursing and funeral service students gained experience as did first responders, including police detachments and firefighting units from across Harlan County.

The Carlie Thompson Scholarship Fund at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College has been created by his widow, Joyce. The first scholarship will be awarded for the fall 2014 semester and will be for the amount of $1,000.

Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College biology students this spring have joined with pupils from Arlie Boggs Elementary School, located in the Letcher County community of Eolia, in planting vegetable seeds as part of a community garden project between the two schools.

Southeast’s Funeral Service Program only one in state; first class set to graduate in May
The program began accepting students a year ago and is the only one of its kind within Kentucky. It features a two-year curriculum leading to the Associate’s Degree, and excitement for the future of the ground-breaking program is profound, offering a curriculum overseen by Denise Shumate, long-time professor and administrator.
